Why local matters: Firewood quarantines are active in most of the states listed here — Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey all restrict moving untreated firewood across state lines, and internal county-level quarantines (spotted lanternfly, emerald ash borer) apply within several states too. Buying from a supplier within about 50 miles of where you'll burn it is the simplest way to stay compliant and protect local trees.
A full cord is a stack measuring 4' × 4' × 8' — 128 cubic feet. A face cord is only as deep as the log length (often 16"), so it's roughly a third of a full cord — a common source of disputes when it isn't stated clearly.
